A factual comparison
An open-source agentic production system that turns an AI coding assistant into the operator for a video pipeline.
The AI production studio. You direct over your own footage, and Montage produces a finished, editable video.
A plain-language brief, a reference video, an existing clip, or a local media project.
Footage you already recorded: interviews, podcasts, webinars, events, demos, or a video library.
Install the repository and operate it through a compatible coding assistant, with local tools and optional provider keys.
Use the Montage web product. Point it at footage, direct what you need, review the result, then polish the final cut in Studio.
Can orchestrate generated media, open or stock footage, and existing source material through different pipelines.
Stays grounded in your source. Montage reads the screen, not just the transcript, and uses the transcript for spoken intelligence and captions.
Keeps project files inspectable and editable, with approval gates before the final render.
Produces finished, on-brand, editable video. You keep the direction, taste, boundaries, and final judgment.
You want an open-source production system, technical setup is acceptable, and you want to configure the underlying pipeline and providers.
You already have footage and want to direct what gets produced without assembling and operating the production stack yourself.
The category boundary
Its documented pipelines can combine generated media, open archives, stock footage, existing clips, narration, music, captions, composition tools, and provider APIs. The AI coding assistant operates the pipeline and presents approval gates.
OpenMontage is AGPL-3.0 software. A local toolchain is required, and optional provider usage can add production costs.
Read the official OpenMontage repositoryYou point Montage at recorded material and direct the outcome. Its live visual intelligence reads the screen, not just the transcript. The transcript remains the spine for spoken intelligence and spoken captions.
Montage produces a controllable first cut as finished, editable video. You keep the taste and final judgment, with polish in Studio.
Playbooks are new and available to eligible accounts as rollout expands. They capture editorial judgment once so it can be reused.
